Happy 2012! To get the new year started off right, Eyes on Final Fantasy will be giving away a copy of the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Collector's Edition to one lucky member. The English release of FFXIII-2 is right around the corner (January 31) and many of us are very excited to get our hands on it. One of you will be doing so for free! Along with the game, the Collector's Edition comes with special digipack packaging, the 4-disc Official Soundtrack, and a concept art book.

A while back, ShlupQuack and I got the opportunity to visit Square-Enix in their Los Angeles offices for an exclusive look at Final Fantasy XIII-2. We had a blast! The details had been posted a little while ago up in the forums and the new CMS site (which we thought would be up by now but there have been some delays), and the holiday combined with general busyness prevented us from posting it up here. NieR isn't directly related to Final Fantasy other than being published by Square Enix. But there is one thing that Final Fantasy fans have in common with the players of NieR, and that is an interest in good music.
This is kind of short notice, but At 7:30 AM EST (that's 10 minutes!), Square Enix Music in Japan is live streaming a concert of NieR music. Check it out here!

UPDATE: It's over. It doesn't look like you'll have the chance to relive this event if you missed it, but it looks like it was arranged to highlight the release of the NieR Tribute Album released last month. A couple of the artists from the live event are on this album as well.

Director Toriyama confirmed in an interview with Dengeki Playstation that Sazh is not forgotten like certain dead character montages make him out to be. Though he's only mentioned briefly in the interview, Toriyama does say that Sazh is 'currently undertaking activities which are supposed to better Gran Pulse'.

For those of you out there that are interested in Final Fantasy XIV, or if - like myself - you're playing it, then there's some promising news in the 16th letter from the producer, Yoshi-P. It's a long read, but if you like, I've done my best to summarise it for you.
In other FFXIV news, the official Final Fantasy XIV forums have moved out of beta and into full service! What does this mean? Well... not much, really. But if you're playing the game then get over there and let your voice be heard on all things FFXIV. When you're done, be sure to come back to Eyes on Final Fantasy to talk with us about FFXIV, other FF games, your favourite TV shows, the price of fish and almost everything else!

Square-Enix has launched an electronic magazine aptly named the The Official Square-Enix Magazine, and it's worth a read for the Final Fantasy XIII-2 information alone, let alone the information on Deus Ex: Human Revolution (out 23rd-26th August depending on where you live) and the new Tomb Raider game that's in the works. We'll naturally focus on FFXIII-2, though, and here's the summary of what's noted...
Battle System
- You will have the ability fight alongside befriended monsters.
- You can pick and mix several different monsters in preparation for a battle.
- Monsters will have special abilities which will be similar to that of the Eidolons in FFXIII.
- The battle system will retain paradigm shifts.
- The battle system will be even faster and more dynamic than that of FFXIII.
Gameplay
- Gameplay will feature puzzle-solving elements.
- While FFXIII was 'story-driven', this game will be 'player-driven' with elements of interaction and choice.
- There will be a new game progression system which encourages the player to explore the world and various challenges on offer.
Characters and Storyline
- Noel will act as protagonist in the game.
- FFXIII's characters will all feature in FFXIII-2, and "every one of them will have some involvement in the story - albeit in an unexpected fashion."
- The game will have a 'darker' tone.
- The player detailed alongside Lightning in the logo is still being kept secret by SE for now, but they have stated he shares a relationship with Noel Kreiss.
- Noel grew up in Gran Pulse in a very different environment to that of Vanille & Fang, and was ignorant of life on Cocoon. He has survived in harsh conditions where you have to fight monsters to survive, and is burdened by a heavy destiny.
- Lightning will go into battle at the very beginning of the game wearing the armour featured in FFXIII-2 trailers.
- While FFXIII featured the gods Lindzei and Pulse, it will be Etro who will feature strongly in FFXIII-2. Feathers floating around Lightning in trailers symbolise Etro. ...
