Okay, so there's this guy, right? His name is probably Tidus, but I'll call him Rez. Rez lives in some kinda Futuristic World with tall buildings and underwater breathing and whatnot. Rez is great at this one game called Blitzball. All the little kiddies love him, he gets all the hot babes. They're all like "OMG Rez will u plz sign moi Blitzball?!?!" and he's like "Heck yeah". But that's not important. One night, while Rez is playing a kew'-arse game of Blitz, some freaking huge Moby Dick-lookin' monster comes and kills prettymuch everyone in the world or something. Well, at the very least it kills mostly everyone. So NATURALLY, Rez blacks out and wakes up a thousand years later.

So Rez needs to defeat the Grand Evil Thing called Sin and get back home, so to do this he travels all over the world meeting friends fighting bosses advancing the story and leveling up in order to build up to a Final Conflict with the Grand Evil Thing and then a big explosion and end credits.
