Final Fantasy IX
Review by Trumpet Thief
Review by Trumpet Thief
The game starts off with a mother and her child in a boat, caught in the powerful waves of the sea. Things were looking bad for both of them, with the dark sky already predicting their horrible future. Just before a very powerful wave hits the weak boat, a girl wakes up from slumber, with a look of shock on her face. That girl is Garnet Til Alexandros the 17th, the princess of Alexandria. She looks out the window admiring the kingdom, with the birds flying by, and a large theater ship in the air. This is just the beginning of the memorable story of Final Fantasy IX...

Storyline The plot begins with a group called Tantalus plotting to kidnap Princess Garnet of Alexandria, and they plan to do that by having her taken away while the rest of Tantalus does the classic play "I want to be your Canary". Zidane Tribal, along with his companion Blank are the ones assigned to take the princess away with them. Meanwhile, a small black mage is roaming the streets of Alexandria, hoping to be able to watch the play with a fake ticket in hand. Although his plan fails, he is given another chance by another rat child, as they sneak into Alexandria from the roofs of many houses. This very night is when the adventure of many begins. Once night arrives, Zidane and the rest of Tantalus have their plan set to kidnap the princess, but it turns into a game of hide-and-seek, with Zidane chasing Garnet around the castle. The word gets to Queen Brahne, who orders her knights Adelbert Steiner and Beatrix to locate her. Zidane finally catches the princess, who surprisingly, wants to be taken away from the castle, telling Zidane that her mother has changed, and she wants to find out what has happened to her. But as the knights finally catch up to them, the group is forced to leave quickly, and it turns into a humourus night since the group is forced to enter the play, and improvise. Tantalus is barely able to escape the from Alexandria, with the Queen hot on their trail, attacking the Theater ship. Tantalus has more companions on their ship; Captain of the knights of Pluto, Steiner, and the mysterious black mage named Vivi. Eventually, Zidane gets caught up into one of the greatest adventures in history, including the mother of Garnet, a strange white haired man, and a crystal which is the essence of all life. |

Gameplay The gameplay in this game is this game is one to be remembered. First comes the issue of the battle system. Final Fantasy IX uses the Active Time Battle system, which has been used in many older FFs. To learn an ability, you have to equip clothing, or a weapon. FFIX gives a vast amount of weapons and abilities for your party, and unlike it's predecessors FFVIII and FFVII, has it's party members assigned to certain roles, for example, Vivi being able to learn only black magic. The next thing that comes into the picture is Minigames. There is a different variety of Mini Games/Sidequests in Final Fantasy IX; the first one you got access to being skipping. Timing jumps to get prizes. That is just a small minigame, compared to Chocobo Hot and Cold. Basically, in that game, your chocobo digs in certain area's for treasure. Chocobo Hot and Cold has you searching in area's all around the world of Gaia! There are many other minigames aside from those two that I have just mentioned. |

Music From all the Final Fantasies, there is at least one piece from each game that you could never forget, one piece of music that you may have thought was so beautiful, that you may have wanted to play it over and over. Well, luckily, you will find many of those kind of pieces in FFIX. One piece that comes to mind is Melodies of Life; the theme played at the very end of the game would probably be the best one you would have ever heard. If not, then close. There are many more tunes that any gamer would want to hear from this game. |

Graphics A great amount of the quality of FFIX comes from the graphics of this game. Although they are not as great as Final Fantasy VIII's graphics, they have been an improvement nonetheless. There are many very realistic cinematics spread out in the game of FFIX, from a theater ship flying through the air of a vast Kingdom, to a whole world being destroyed by one powerful blast. Character designs are very realistic, as you can see from the cinematics, although not the best, from what I think. Different characters from different races appear in this game, rendered into 3D graphics, with realistic looking backrounds, and many area's that you can explore. The graphics, although not the best, are very good. |

Overall Final Fantasy IX is from what I think, a bridge between the old Final Fantasies and the newer Final Fantasies, and I think it has done a very good job at that. |
