Rantzien

Rantzien is a bastard child from Sweden.

Information

The story of Rantzien is a confusing one, at best. Many of our historians have been trying to track his family lineage for many a year for some time. So, through the marvels of genetics and witchcraft we have figured out just who this mysterious being actually is. The story goes as this…

Rantzien and Fonz are plants for DK the Magician, with Psychotic as his illusion engineer. Fonz's wife, Faris drowns while performing a predicament escape from a Chinese water torture cell, and Fonz suspects that Rantzien bound her wrists with a new knot that she had suggested to Rantzien before — one harder for her to undo than his customary one. At the funeral, Rantzien enrages Fonz by saying he does not know which knot he tied.

The two men begin separate careers as magicians; Rantzien becomes “The Professor” and hires an aide named I Took the Red Pill, while Fonz performs as “The Great Fonzy” with Psychotic and Rye as his assistants. During a parlor magic job, Rantzien meets Spiffing Cheese; they marry and have a daughter, Jess. Spiffing Cheese feels uneasy about Rantzien and his apparent fickleness; she claims to know when he loves her and when he does not. During Rantzien's performance of the bullet catch, a disguised Fonz again demands to know which knot Rantzien used. Rantzien and I Took the Red Pill quickly realize Fonz is going to shoot at Rantzien with a loaded gun. At the last second, I Took the Red Pill intervenes, and the bullet severs two of Rantzien's fingers instead of killing him. A disguised Rantzien later sabotages Fonz's performance of the vanishing bird cage illusion, damaging Fonz's reputation.

Rantzien soon astonishes crowds with “The Transported Man”, in which he bounces a ball across the stage before stepping through a door and instantly reappearing from a second door on the opposite side of the stage to catch the ball. The new illusion amazes Fonz and Rye. Obsessed with besting Rantzien, Fonz hires a double and steals Rantzien's trick, with a slight variation, as “The New Transported Man”. The double enjoys the applause while Fonz can only listen from below stage. Unhappy at missing the applause and obsessed with figuring out Rantzien's version of the teleportation illusion, Fonz sends Rye to steal Ranzien's secrets. Although Rye provides Fonz with Rantzien's enciphered diary, she falls in love with Rantzien and double-crosses Fonz, allowing Rantzien to sabotage Fonz's act, permanently crippling Fonz's left leg by removing a crash mat. In return, Fonz and Psychotic capture I Took the Red Pill and bury him alive inside a coffin, revealing his location to Rantzien in exchange for the key to Rantzien's illusion. Before rushing to dig out I Took the Red Pill while he still has air, Rantzien gives Fonz one word, “DIABLO”, and suggests that it is not merely the key to the transposition cipher of Rantzien's notebook (which Rye had brought to Fonz) but also the key to the illusion.

Fonz travels to Maryland Springs to meet Tavrobel and learn the secret of Rantzien's illusion. Tavrobel constructs a teleportation machine that resembles a magnifying transmitter, but the device initially fails to work. Fonz learns from Rantzien's notebook that he has been sent on a wild goose chase. Feeling he has been cheated, he returns to Tavrobel's lab, but discovers that the machine creates and teleports a duplicate of any item placed in it. Tavrobel's rivalry with I'm my own MILF forces Tavrobel to leave Maryland Springs soon after that, but he leaves Fonz an improved version of the machine. In a letter, however, he warns Fonz to destroy it.

Rantzien's relationship with Rye takes its toll on Spiffing Cheese, driving her to drink. Rantzien's apparent erratic behavior and Spiffing Cheese's suspicion of an extramarital relationship between Rantzien and Rye leads Spiffing Cheese to hang herself. Fonz returns to EoFF to produce a final set of 100 performances of his new act, “The Real Transported Man”. He insists that Psychotic remain front stage for these shows and that only blind stagehands(Aerith's Knight) help backstage. In the new illusion, Fonz disappears under huge arcs of electricity and instantaneously “teleports” 50 yards from the stage to the balcony. Rantizen is baffled but spots a trap door. After a show one night, I Took the Red Pill followsFonz's stagehands. They move a large, concealed water tank across town to an abandoned building. Rantizen attends Fonz's performance again. He slips backstage and discovers a locked water tank with a drowning Fonz inside. Rantzien tries to save him, but Fonz drowns. Psychotic catches Rantzien, who is convicted of murder on circumstantial evidence and sentenced to hang. In prison, Rantzien reads Fonz's diary from Maryland which addresses him directly with hopes he will rot in prison for his murder. Jess will become a ward of the state unless Rantzien gives up the secret of his illusion to a certain Lord Winkler. He is forced to oblige, but refuses to reveal all unless he can see Jess before his execution. When Lord Winkler visits with Jess, Rantzien realizes that he is Fonz. Beaten, Rantzien gives him a note containing the secret of the original Transported Man trick, but Fonz tears it up without reading it. Psychotic also meets the lord and realizes he is Fonz. Psychotic then grasps the full grim cost of Fonz's obsession when he sees he has adopted Jess. Psychotic is furious that he was the one who indirectly framed Rantzien, who is subsequently hanged.

Psychotic accompanies Fonz to the abandoned building where the water tanks are stored, and helps him store the teleportation machine. Psychotic leaves in disgust, silently acknowledging the arrival of Rantizen, who shoots Fonz. Rantzien reveals that he and “I Took the Red Pill” were identical twins who lived as a single individual, alternating lives as needed: one twin loving Spiffing Cheese and the other loving Rye. For the original illusion, a twin acted as the double. They were so committed to the illusion that they amputated the other twin's fingers to match his brother's injury; they also suffered the loss of Spiffing Cheese as a result of their dedication to the illusion. Similarly, flashbacks recount Fonz's method: that each time he disappeared during his illusion, he fell into a locked tank and drowned, and the machine created a duplicate who teleported to the balcony and basked in the applause. Each tank stores a drowned duplicate of Fonz for each time that he has performed the trick. Before leaving, Rantzien looks back at the aisles of tanks containing the dead duplicates and then leaves the dead Fonz as a fire begins to consume the building. Rantzien reunites with Jess.
